Don’t let high temperatures set fire to your summer move
Summer is peak season for Cincinnati moving companies. But the season doesn’t just mean clear skies and free schedules, it also brings high humidity and a scorching sun. From heat exhaustion to sunburn, it’s important to protect yourself from the worst the heat has to offer.
Chill out with these five tips to guarantee safety during your summer move.
Drink more fluids before, during and after moving. While seemingly obvious, it’s important to hydrate before you start feeling thirsty. In fact, by the time you realize you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, active people should drink at least 16 to 20 ounces of fluid one to two hours before an outdoor activity to avoid dehydration. After that, you should consume 6 to 12 ounces of fluid every 10 to 15 minutes that you’re outside. Then—you guessed it—drink even more once you’re finished, replenishing the fluids you sweat out. Don’t forget, alcoholic and caffeinated beverages tend to work opposite, pulling fluids from the body.
Protect yourself from the sun while moving. More protection the better. Grab a wide-brimmed hat to keep you cool and protect your head and neck, throw on your favorite shades and lather on the sunscreen. Go with SPF 15 or higher (look for “broad spectrum” or “UVA/UVB protection” on the label) 30 minutes before sun exposure, and be sure to reapply every two hours.
Pick appropriate moving clothes. Choose articles of clothing that will wick moisture away from your body. Dri-Fit fabrics, often sold in sporting stores, are a better choice than cottons. Avoid anything heavy, unbreathable or overly form-fitting. Wear light-colored, loose clothing while staying away from long-sleeved shirts and full-length pants. Think ahead as you’re packing your closets away, being careful to leave out optimal clothes for your hot day of hauling.
Plan ahead for moving day. During your move, you likely won’t have access to your refrigerator or freezer, so it’s essential to strategize. While defrosting your freezer, place the cold drinks and frozen foods you’ll need day-of in coolers along with frozen cloths to use as cold compresses, water bottles that will slowly melt through the day, and hydrating and energizing fruit, like grapes.
Hire a moving company. At the end of the day, the best way to beat the heat is to search Cincinnati moving companies that can do the heavy lifting for you. While you always want to take precautions where high temps are involved, save yourself the sweat and find a professional.
