8 steps to keeping your plants happy when moving
Whether they’re plants, pets or people, moving with living things always takes some extra care. So, when you’re searching Indianapolis moving companies, choose the movers who go the extra mile.
If you’re choosing to pack, and even move, your precious plants yourself, follow these steps to ensure your friendly foliage gets from point A to point B in one piece.
-
Repot your plant. If you’re moving further than across town, it’s good to repot your plant, about three weeks prior, in a sturdy plastic pot of similar size, as changing the size of the pot can harm them. Repotting your plant will allow you to carefully pack its original pot to prevent damage on a long move—not to mention they’re much lighter than ceramic pots.
-
Prune large plants. To make transport easier (and to keep happy, healthy plants) trim up rogue leaves and new growth a week or two before your move.
-
Water down. Hydrate plants a couple days before the move. Be careful not to overwater, especially in the winter when wet soil can freeze.
-
Prep tall plants. Pack sphagnum moss into the top of each pot, then wrap the pot with plastic and secure it. This will keep all your soil in place, plus keep your car clean. Make sure to remove the plastic as soon as you arrive at your destination so the plant can breathe again. Pro Tip: Request wardrobe boxes to pack tall plants.
-
Pack up. On the day of or night before your move, place potted plants in individual packing boxes. Fill any extra space in the box with newspaper to prevent shifting or toppling during the car ride. You can loosely close the flaps of the box, or even leave it open. If you do close the plant in, don’t forget to poke air holes in the box. Pro Tip: If you’re moving in the winter, wrap all plants in newspaper or a sheet. Even momentary exposure to the cold can damage fragile foliage.
-
Your plants are like pets. It can be tough traveling long distances with plants. If you need to make overnight stops, treat them like you would a pet. Don’t leave plants in the car in extreme temperatures. If you’ll be gone for more than an hour, crack a window and try to park in the shade. And yes, you may want to bring them into your hotel room.
-
Know the laws. If you’re moving across state lines, make sure you know their individual laws. Some states, like California and Florida, are pretty strict on incoming plants. Depending on which state you’re entering and leaving, you may also need a certificate of parasite inspection (ahem, Gypsy moth).
-
Have a plant sale. If you decide the risk to your plants is just too great, have a plant sale before your move and use the money to buy new plants once you’re moved into your new home.
