Hyland Software
West of downtown Cleveland sits its top large employer
The Plain Dealer named Hyland Software the top large employer of 2015. Also named to Fortune’s Top 100 Places to Work, Hyland Software is northeast Ohio’s largest software company. Founded in 1991, Hyland Software is a private technology organization that creates content management software called OnBase. Hyland’s clients are healthcare systems, banks and government agencies, all of which use its suite of products for electronic document management as well as other daily tasks. Likely the reason for Hyland’s accreditation on The Plain Dealer’s list of Top Workplaces is its commitment to its employees. Hyland believes in work-life balance; offering hair cuts, dry cleaning, and day care at its Westlake headquarters.
Sherwin-Williams
One of Cleveland’s top Fortune 500 companies
Founded in 1866, Sherwin-Williams’ headquarters is located in downtown Cleveland. Also a Fortune 500 company, Sherwin-Williams has 3,672 employees employed in northeast Ohio. Sherwin-Williams manufactures, distributes and sells wallpaper, paints, coatings and other related products. Sherwin-Williams’ clients include professional, industrial, commercial and retail customers alike, but known primarily for its Sherwin-Williams Paints line. Its work culture is philanthropic; on the weekends employees walk, run, bowl and more to support local charities while Sherwin-Williams’ foundation donates time and funds directly to organizations that benefit children’s health and education.
Akron Children’s Hospital
The top healthcare system to work for in northeast Ohio
Founded in 1890, Akron Children’s Hospital is the largest pediatric healthcare system in northeast Ohio with a campus located in downtown Akron, 45 minutes from downtown Cleveland, and a second campus located about 82 miles away in Boardman, Ohio. Employing more than 5,000 people between their two campuses and treating more than 800,000 patients across their 80 care sites each year, Akron Children’s was recognized in the large employer category by The Plain Dealer. Akron Children’s offers a full range of services, including well visits, trauma and intensive care, and treatment of rare childhood disorders — treating infants, children, teens, burn victims of all ages and adults with genetic and maternal/fetal conditions.
The Progressive Group of Insurance Companies
Cleveland’s big hitter for insurance providers
East of Cleveland in Mayfield Village, Ohio is The Progressive Group of Insurance Companies’ headquarters. Founded in 1937, Progressive is now one of the largest car insurance providers in the U.S. Also insuring motorcycles, boats, RVs, commercial vehicles and homes (through select companies) nationwide, Progressive operates in three segments: personal lines, commercial auto and other-indemnity. Locally, Progressive employs some 8,500 individuals and has been voted as one of the best places to launch a career due to its dedication to growing and developing business leaders. In 2008, Progressive purchased the naming rights for the Cleveland Indians’ ballpark — the former Jacob’s Field is now known as Progressive Field.
Reminger Co., LPA
Located in downtown Cleveland is its top mid-sized employer
Reminger Co., LPA, takes home the prize for top mid-sized employer on The Plain Dealer’s list of Top Workplaces, and promises “Results. Period.” Founded in 1958 in downtown Cleveland, the company employs paralegals and attorneys. Reminger provides a unique customer experience, with the bandwidth of a large firm and the attention to detail a smaller firm can provide. Serving both Fortune 500 companies and small businesses alike, Reminger has been named the top mid-sized place-to-work in Cleveland for five out of the past six years — never dropping below No. 11 since its founding. With more than 300 employees and 12 offices in three states (Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana) the firm credits its success to the commitment and hard work of its associates. According to The Plain Dealer, Reminger associates feel the weight of their impact and know, because of that, the high quality of work their clients have come to expect from them.
Budget Dumpster
In Cleveland suburb is northeast Ohio’s top, small employer
Budget Dumpster was named the best small company to work for by The Plain Dealer. Located in Westlake, about a half hour from downtown Cleveland, this tech-savvy company, ironically, does not own any dumpsters. Founded in 2005, Budget Dumpster, instead, markets the “big steel boxes” and dump trucks for the companies that own these products, but don’t have the time to market them. Doing business in the nation’s largest cities, Budget Dumpster completes rentals by the thousands each week. The company offers its more than 50 employees flexible hours, a 401(k) and an average annual salary of $50,000. Even with all this, that’s not why Budget Dumpster is seen as an ideal place to work. The work culture is what sets it apart; The Plain Dealer credits its “intangible sense of excitement and camaraderie.”
